Key Findings
- Yokozuna weight has surged 37% over 9 decades: the average was 125 kg in the 1950s vs. 172 kg in the 2020s
- Mongolia has produced 6 yokozuna since 2003, including the top winner (Hakuho, 45 yusho) and 3rd-place Asashoryu (25)
- Futahaguro (promoted 1986) is the only yokozuna in history with zero tournament wins — he was expelled for misconduct
- The two tallest yokozuna, Akebono (203 cm) and Musashimaru (192 cm), were both Hawaiian-born Americans
- After a 19-year gap with no Japanese yokozuna reaching the top, Kisenosato broke the drought in 2017
The Mongolian Era
From 2003 to 2021, every yokozuna promoted was Mongolian — a streak of 5 consecutive foreign grand champions (Asashoryu, Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kakuryu, Terunofuji), interrupted only by Kisenosato in 2017.
