Self-reported measurements average 10% longer than clinician-measured (15.0 vs 13.6 cm erect)

The 2023 global pooled mean across 55,761 men: 8.7 cm flaccid, 12.9 cm stretched, 13.9 cm erect

Key Findings

  • Self-report bias is real: men report ~1.4 cm more than clinicians measure for erect length (15.0 vs 13.6 cm)
  • Stretched penile length (SPL) is a reliable proxy for erect length — the global mean of 12.9 cm is within 1 cm of the erect mean (13.9 cm)
  • South America (Brazil, 13.4 cm) and Europe (12.8 cm) show the longest stretched measurements; Asia averages 11.7 cm
  • Sample sizes vary enormously: from 52 (Greece) to 55,761 (Bhatt 2023 meta-analysis), making direct country comparisons unreliable
  • The Bhatt 2023 meta-analysis noted a 24% increase in measured erect length over 29 years, likely due to methodology improvements rather than biological change
